Quick Start
Get from zero to a working Spec Kit session in about 10 minutes.
If your organization has not subscribed or assigned seats yet, an organization admin must complete Admin Setup first. Members can then follow the steps below.
Prerequisites
- An Azure DevOps organization and project
- Permission to install marketplace extensions (or an admin who already installed Spec Kit)
- A seat on the Raaghu Spec Kit subscription (an admin assigns seats)
Steps
1. Install and open
- Install Raaghu Spec Kit from the Visual Studio Marketplace, if it is not installed yet.
- Open a project → left sidebar → Raaghu Spec Kit.
Details: Installation and Launch.
2. Authorize with Microsoft
- On the landing page, click Authorize Now (returning seated users may skip this and see a short loading screen while Spec Kit signs them in).
- Complete Microsoft sign-in and approve access.
- If you see "Request submitted. Retry authorization after admin approval", ask an admin to approve you under Organization settings → Extensions → Raaghu Spec Kit → Users → Pending requests (Access Requests), then click Authorize Now again.
3. Get a seat
Raaghu Spec Kit is seat-based. Approving a pending request also assigns a seat (Approve and assign seat?). Admins can still Assign / Unassign seats later on the Users tab.
- Admins: Azure DevOps → Organization settings → Extensions → Raaghu Spec Kit → Users (approve pending requests, or Assign / Unassign seats). See Organization Settings.
- Members: Ask an admin to approve your request or assign you a seat. Until then, you may see a seat or subscription message.
4. Initialize Spec Kit (once per project)
- If Spec Kit is not set up yet, click Initialize Spec Kit.
- Wait for "Initialization complete!".
This creates the Raaghu Spec Kit/ tree in your project Wiki (older projects may still use Speckit/). Do this once per project.
Details: Initialize Spec Kit.
5. Connect AI
Chat and most Spec Kit features need an AI connection (the product may label this LLM).
If you are an organization admin or Project Administrator
- Open the menu (top of Spec Kit) → Settings (regular members do not see this menu item).
- On LLM Settings, choose how this project gets AI:
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| An admin already set up AI for this project | On LLM Settings, leave Project LLM Off (or turn on Raaghu AI if that is how your org is set up) |
| You need your own provider key | On LLM Settings, turn Project LLM On, add Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, or Claude, save, and set it as Default |
| Chat still says AI is not configured | In Azure DevOps → Organization settings → Extensions → Raaghu Spec Kit → AI Settings → Project, allow Use organization AI, Use project AI, or Use Raaghu AI, or add Raaghu AI credits |
Details: Settings.
If you are a regular team member
You will not see Settings in the menu. Ask a project or organization admin to connect AI for this project. When chat no longer says AI is not configured, continue to the next step.
6. Continue to your first feature
When AI is working:
- Prefer guided cards? Start from Workflows.
- Prefer the full command path? Go to Your First Feature.
The first time you enter the workspace, a short product tour may appear. You can dismiss it — it is optional.
